Introduction
Select to PDF is a Chrome extension designed to help users select text from webpages and compile it into a PDF document with source URLs. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our extension.
We are committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. We believe in transparency and are dedicated to ensuring you understand how your data is handled when using our extension.
Information We Collect
Our extension collects the following information to fulfill its purpose:
- Selected text from webpages: Text you highlight on any webpage is saved locally on your device.
- Source URLs: The URL of the webpage where text is selected is stored alongside the text for attribution in the exported PDF.
- Timestamp information: The date and time when selections are made, to help you organize your research chronologically.
We do not collect any personally identifiable information (PII) such as your name, email address, or demographic information through the extension's functionality.
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information solely to:
- Save your text selections and source URLs locally using the Chrome Storage API.
- Allow you to view, manage, and delete your selections in the extension popup.
- Generate PDF documents from your selections, including source URLs, using the jsPDF library on your device.
- Organize your selections chronologically based on when they were captured.
We do not use your data for any other purposes, such as analytics, advertising, or marketing.
Data Storage and Sharing
All data is stored locally on your device via Chrome's Storage API. We do not:
- Transmit your selected text or URLs to any external servers, including our own.
- Share your data with third parties.
- Access or process your data outside of the extension's functionality.
- Use cookies or similar tracking technologies.
PDF generation occurs entirely on your device, and no data leaves your browser unless you choose to save or share the PDF yourself.
The extension uses Chrome's local storage, which means your selections are only accessible on the device and browser where you installed the extension. Your data is not synchronized across devices unless you use Chrome's built-in sync functionality.
Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously, even though all information is stored locally. The extension:
- Uses Chrome's secure Storage API, which provides isolation between extensions.
- Does not expose your selections to other extensions or websites.
- Processes all data locally, minimizing security risks associated with data transmission.
While we implement reasonable security measures, please be aware that no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. The security of your data also depends on your browser's security and your device's protection.
Your Rights
You have full control over your data within the extension. You can:
- Delete individual selections using the "×" button next to each item.
- Clear all saved selections using the "Clear All" button in the popup.
- Uninstall the extension at any time, which removes all locally stored data.
- Export your data in PDF format for your own records.
- Access all your saved selections through the extension popup at any time.
Since we don't collect or store your data on our servers, there's no need to make formal data access or deletion requests to us. You have direct control over all your data.
Permissions
The extension requests the following permissions to operate:
- activeTab: To access the current webpage when you select text.
- storage: To save your selections locally on your device.
- <all_urls>: To allow text selection on any webpage you visit.
These permissions are essential for the core functionality of the extension and are used only for the purposes described in this policy.
Children's Privacy
Our extension is not specifically directed to children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Since the extension only stores locally selected text and URLs, there is minimal risk to children's privacy. However, if you are a parent or guardian and believe your child is using our extension and you have concerns about their privacy, please contact us.
Updates to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. When we make changes:
- We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy.
- We may notify you of significant changes through the extension or through the Chrome Web Store listing.
- We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we are protecting your information.
Your continued use of the extension after any changes to the Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
Regulatory Compliance
Our extension is designed to be compliant with major privacy regulations, including:
- GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation): Since we don't collect or process personal data on our servers, many GDPR requirements don't directly apply. However, we respect the principles of data minimization and purpose limitation.
- CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act): We don't sell or share your personal information as defined by the CCPA.
- COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act): We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Since all data is stored locally on your device and we don't collect or process it on our servers, many aspects of these regulations that deal with data collection, processing, and transfer don't directly apply to our extension.
