What's new in Select to PDF

Citations, and a lot of repairs

The biggest release so far. A new way to export your research, a redesigned interface, and ten bugs fixed — several of which were quietly losing work.

New

• Export a reference list in APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard or BibTeX. Authors and publication dates are read from the page where it publishes them, and can be filled in by hand where it doesn't. Sources are deduplicated, so ten quotes from one article become one reference.
• Undo for deleting a snippet and for clearing your collection. It survives closing the popup, so it's still there when you realise.
• Dark mode, following your system setting.
• A storage indicator showing how much room your collection takes and how much of that is screenshots.

Improved

• A redesigned popup that matches this site, with Inter throughout.
• Screenshots are about four times smaller with no visible quality loss — a typical capture dropped from 1.5 MB to 400 KB.
• Clearer messages when something can't be done, instead of advice that was never going to work.

Fixed

• PDF text corruption. Curly quotes, em dashes and ellipses were silently dropped from exported PDFs, and non-Latin scripts came out as mojibake. This affected ordinary English articles, not just other languages.
• Snippets lost when saving quickly. Two saves landing at the same moment could overwrite each other, with both reporting success.
• The first right-click after installing did nothing on tabs that were already open.
• Exports that silently did nothing. Asking for a filename could close the popup before the export ran.
• Leaving a page discarded multi-select work that hadn't been saved yet.
• Multi-select could be switched on but never off from the popup.
• Right-clicking an image captured the whole window instead of the image.
• Dragging text or a link into the popup silently reordered your collection.
• Snippets saved in the same instant could share an identifier, so deleting one removed both.
• The coloured bar beside each snippet was drawn in the wrong place when a snippet ran across two PDF pages.

First public release

Select text on any page, collect it across tabs, and export it as a single document.

• Right-click any selection to save it, with its formatting and source link intact.
• Multi-select mode for gathering several passages from one page.
• Screenshots alongside text snippets.
• Tags, notes, search and drag-to-reorder.
• Export to PDF with a cover page, table of contents and source references, or to Markdown.
